President’s Note
Our chapter is graced to have with us Julie Freeman, President of IABC International , on November 1 and 2, especially so soon after the visit of IABC Chairman Adrian Cropley in October. The truth is that we’re special – we are the largest IABC chapter in the United States – and Julie is making a special visit to be with us.
On November 1, she will speak on “New Rules for Communicators” at the Bethesda Hyatt. Julie will address the changes in today’s business climate and what communicators need to do differently. The event is value priced for members – only $35.
On November 2, Julie will speak to Senior Communicators about what CEOs want from communicators at ASAE in D.C. (1575 I Street).
Our Silver Inkwell Gala has been rescheduled to November 28 and it will be held at the Bethesda Hyatt. Each paying entrant will have his / her entry reviewed by two judges to provide you with the professional feedback you expect.
As with anything, you get out of your IABC membership what you put into it. We have offered a strong professional development program this year to help you develop in your career and expand your horizons. IABC, as an association, is unlike the other communication associations in that it spans the gamut of communications from PR to marketing to intranets and social media to investor relations – no other professional communication association has such a breadth.
Our chapter offers you a supportive community that allows you to learn, build your network, and perhaps even find a mentor outside of your organization. We continue to welcome new members who are just getting started in their communication careers.
We also continue to experiment with new formats – with a mix of breakfast, lunch, and dinner meetings at a variety of locations to try to reach more of you in a chapter that spans northern Virginia to Baltimore. Our chapter continues to experiment to find the right mix of programs, formats, and timing to meet your needs in the current economic environment.
I hope to see you at an upcoming meeting and, as always, your feedback is welcome.
Best regards .
Angelo Ioffreda,
President, IABC/DC Metro

SCC RECAP
The IABC DC Metro Senior Communicators Council (SCC) has been incredibly fortunate to offer roundtable discussions with two international IABC officers this fall. The first session “Be the Table,” with IABC International Board Chairman Adrian Cropley, was held on Oct. 5. The second session “Conversations with CEOs,” featuring IABC International President Julie Freeman, ABC, APR, will be held Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 8 to 10 am at ASAE. Julie will be sharing the results of new IABC research on what top executives want from their communicators.
Summary of Oct. 5 Session “Be the Table”
An experienced executive coach, Adrian Cropley shared practical tips for senior communicators on how to increase their personal brand and sphere of influence with top management. In addition to his presentation, Adrian’s answers to questions from senior communicators provided additional insight. Here’s an example:
How do I provide strategic guidance to a top manager who only asks for tactical assistance, particularly if it isn’t likely to be effective?
Adrian suggested responding to such requests along these lines:
“Yes, I’d be happy to take care of that for you. Would you also like me to ……”
“That sounds like a great idea! May I ask what you would like to achieve?”
“Don’t worry – we can help you with that. I’m also going to do some research on a couple of other alternatives so that you have options available.
Adrian also recommended the following books:
Why Should the Boss Listen to You, James Lukaszewski
What the CEO Wants You to Know, Ram Charan
Senior Communicator Council events are open to chapter members with 15 or more years of experience. If you would like additional information about the SCC or would like to suggest future topics for discussion, please contact Peggy Schoen.

member/get-a-member promotion returns in December
Look out in December for the ever-popular Member-Get-A-Member promotion! The basic premise is that members who recruit new professional members will get three free months of membership for each new member they bring in, up to a full year at no charge! The promotion will begin on Dec. 1, 2011 and run through the last day of December, Pacific time.
Just four rules:
1. The new member must identify the referring member in one of the following ways:
-For mailed, faxed and online enrollments: Write the referring member's first and last name and chapter (or region if he or she is a member-at-large) on the application form.
-For phoned enrollments: Mention the referring member's first and last name and chapter (or region if he or she is a member-at-large)
In other words, the referring member's name must be provided at the same time the check or credit card number is received to be eligible. We cannot apply credit if the referring member's name isn't mentioned, so please be sure it is. We want everyone to benefit from their efforts!
2. The new member must not have been an IABC member since August 1, 2011.
3. The limit for this promotion is four members, which would provide the referring member with a full year of membership at no charge. For members who already have lifetime membership (e.g., 500 Club members), you can donate your free months to the member of your choice, even the member you referred!
4. The new member must be a professional member (not a student member), although recruiting members can be any type.
Why wait? Start recruiting now!
2012 BRINGS CHANGE IN MEMBERSHIP FEES
As we are an association of communicators, we like to keep you informed! As 2011 draws to a close, IABC will be announcing an annual inflation adjustment for IABC membership dues. This change will take effect on Jan. 1, 2012.
This means that for IABC/DC Metro members, international dues will be increasing $7. International dues will now be $249, while regional and chapter dues will remain at $10 and $65, respectively.
And remember, new and lapsed members are still required to pay a $40 application fee.
Please email Katy Kain should you have any questions concerning this change.
