President’s Note

October’s here, so we can focus on the rites of fall – football and the World Series.  In between games, we hope you can find time to take advantage of our active fall line-up as we put the “International” in International Association of Business Communicators and offer some top-flight programs for our senior communicators.

So far this month, on October 5, Adrian Cropley, IABC International Executive Board Chairman, who hails from Melbourne, Australia, spoke to our Senior Communicators Council on strategic alignment.  In his talk entitled “Be the Table,” Adrian addressed how to build your credibility as a communicator, add value to business discussions, build relationships with key stakeholders, and engage others so they will seek out your advice.

If you missed that, fear not: We have plenty of exciting activities coming up.

On October 13, the State Department’s Andrew Cedar will speak on “Communicating with Global Audiences in the 21st Century.” A senior advisor in the Office of the Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, Andrew will share his experience helping lead the State Department’s global public diplomacy strategy while grappling with social media. Andrew will discuss the role of social media in the Arab Spring and social transformation around the world, the evolving role of social media in diplomacy, and the implications for other organizations and communicating with diverse audiences.

On November 1, we will honor our Silver Inkwell Award winners at a Gala at the Bethesda Hyatt.  Details are coming soon!  Our keynote speaker will be outgoing IABC President Julie Freeman, ABC, APR , who will speak about the latest trends in the marketplace and how communicators are adapting to them. Julie will also do a presentation for our Senior Communicators the following morning, November 2, previewing the latest IABC research on what CEOs want from their communication teams. The session will be held at ASAE (1575 I St.). More details soon.

Last but not least, you will soon be asked to vote on president-elect Debbi Jarvisboard slate for 2012.  And, if you are interested in volunteering or a leadership role with our Chapter, please reach out to VP of Membership Katy Kain.

Cheers.

Angelo Ioffreda,
President, IABC/DC Metro
