IABC/DC METRO CHAPTER MEETING

STATE OF THE MEDIA:  Where Journalism's Been, Where It's Going, and Where It's Going

The end is near… or is it? We’ve heard so much about the end of the newspaper industry and journalism as we know it. New mobile tools, social media and individual reporting by bloggers and industry groups all contributed to the way we consume news. But are newspapers and the journalism profession doomed for good?

At the May chapter meeting, we welcome Amy Mitchell, deputy director for the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism. She is involved in all aspects of the PEJ, with a primary focus on designing, managing and writing the Project’s in-depth research reports. This includes the Annual Report on the State of the News Media; more specific studies such as coverage of various election cycles and of major news stories such as the war in Iraq; and the development of the New Media Index and, earlier, the News Coverage Index.

In her presentation, Amy will highlight some of the most intricate findings of the most recent State of the News Media report and highlight recent trends in traditional journalism, new media, and how people consume news today.

Amy, who has been with the Project since its inception in 1997, speaks frequently to groups ranging from journalists of all types to press relation professionals to heads of various organizations on where journalism is heading. She also speaks on the various components of research conducted at the Project. She has also won awards for PEJ’s Annual Report on the State of the News Media including two SPJ awards and the Bart Richards award.
